This actually sound either like a cat fight abscess or a tooth Root abscess. Either way, you are right cats are really good at hiding there pain, but i assure you it would be pain full. A vet is required on this one as it will probably need draining and antibiotics. It is no big deal if it is an abscess but it will need attention

Those are his lymph nodes and sounds like they are swollen. Lymph nodes can be enlarged for many reasons including infections and cancers. 'Lymphadenitis' is the term used to describe lymph nodes which are enlarged due to infection or inflammation. Usually, with an infection, an elevated temperature is also present. Lymphadenitis is usually not serious; assuming the infection is diagnosed and curable. In most cases, once the infection is cleared, the enlarged lymph nodes will return to normal size. The cause of the enlarged lymph node must be determined. If a bacterial infection is present, antibiotics will help fight the disease. If a fungal infection is causing the enlarged lymph nodes, then antifungal medications must be given. As one can see, it is very important to first determine the cause, then select the proper treatment.
So... take your cat to the vet to have him examined.

SAME THING HAPPENED to two of my kittens...(phoebharts is correct)
I took one of my kittens to the doctor who has upper respiratory infection(URI) and her lymph nodes were swollen, the vet said that because she has URI that caused the lumps...
my advice is to TAKE HER TO THE VET and get her checked to be on the safe side cause if its an infection, her health is at risk so try calling around your area and check on examination visits to get the cheapest rate and get her checked.......
GOOD LUCK!!!!!

The same thing happened to one of my cats, it turned out it was just an allergic reaction to the flea collar we put on him. (We were dog-sitting and one of the dogs had fleas.)
I don't know if he wears a flea collar or not so it could be a completely different thing. The vet knows best, I'd suggest taking him there. ;)

Go to the vet...now! I would even take him into an emergency clinic. Sounds like this is something brand new...and sounds like the lymph nodes. I would get those checked out ASAP...like yesterday!
