I have a ford mustang too and my advice is to take it in for regular check ups....that'll keep it running well for a long time.

Air Filter: You need to check your air filter periodically. As part of the tune up on your car, replace the filter when it is dirty.
Belts: Belts and hoses should be inspected carefully. Belts that are worn or frayed should be replaced. Hoses that are rotten, brittle or just look bad should be replaced.
Brake Fluid: The brake fluid in a car should be checked monthly. If you need to add fluid, you should add the correct type and make sure you check for any possible leaks in the system.
Engine Oil & Filter: Make sure you check the oil level about once every two weeks. Change your oil every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first to maintain superior quality in your car.
Exhaust System: Try and look underneath your car to inspect for any loose or broken exhaust clamps and supports. If there are any rusted or damaged parts, replace them. Your emission control system should be inspected at least once per year.
Lights: Make sure that all the lights in your car are working properly and clean.
Power Steering Fluid: Power steering fluid should be checked periodically.
Tires: Check tire pressure to make sure you get the optimum fuel mileage and tire wear. Also check for any cuts, excessive tread wear and bulges in your tires.
Transmission Fluid: Transmission fluid should be checked monthly to assure it is clean and not low.
Washer Fluid: Make sure you have enough washer fluid to keep your windshields clean

I think the biggest thing is the oil and you're already doing that. Filters replacement are also part of that. Some other suggestions for a long life car:
Keep it clean, inside and out.
keep up the scheduled maintenance
Drive it like you just got it.
Before you get in it, just look over everything, like tires, the paint, and listen, if anything sounds odd or abnormal when you start the car.

Just about everything i read in response to your question are very good answers, However, The only thing that was not said is that you must spend a few more bucks for oil, air/oil filters, and antifreeze. You can not get the cheap brand and hope everything will be alright. Buy the original (motor craft) or equivalent type fluids. This in itself will help make your engine last longer.

Tire rotations, alignments, new brakes when needed. Use quality fuel (there is a difference between Shell and Wal-Mart in the level of detergents used). Air filter replacements.
At 90,000 miles, look to complete a fuel filter replacement, fuel injector flush, transmission flush, brake flush and new coolant at 120,000 miles.

yes,you should keep all the filters changed on it real good and keep it greased really good, always repair anything that goes bad on it as soon as possible, small things now can lead to big things later on,other than that drive it right, and use the maintenance schedule they give you in the owners manual to help keep it in good condition, they spent a lot of money on these books ,and most people just throw them away, they actually do contain some good reading on your car,you should try reading this sometime,i bet you learn something about the car you didn't know, even learn new things once in a while, but that's a good way to keep it in good condition, good luck,i hope this helps.

Dirt and heat kill any engine, transmission.
Engine oil change often, transmission oil change when its starts getting dirty. Air filter is more important than the oil filter.
