Let X equal the number of pine trees and Y the fir trees
We know that X+Y=850
We also know that the fir trees are $300 and the pine trees are $225. So, 300Y+225X=217500
Solve X+Y=850 for X or X=850-Y and substitute into the second equation: 300Y+225(850-Y)=217500
300Y+191250-225Y=217500
75Y+191250=217500
Y=350
X=500
Proof: 500(225)+350(300)=217500
