Im trying to get in to a normal sleeping pattern, but for some reason I just dont get tired at the right time.

If I get up at 8AM, I won't be tired for a good 20 hours, and then I'm back to odd sleeping patterns again. Luckily Im self employed so I can work the hours I need to but I'd like to be around from 9-5. Any ideas?

Valerian root is a natural herb (comes in capsul form) that helps to relax you and make you sleepy, you can find it just about anywhere that sells vitamins and herbal supplements. Try popping a couple of those and taking a nice hot bath about an hour or two before you want to go to sleep. Warm milk or hot chocolate (made with milk, not water) may also help to relax you.

some people just don't need a lot of sleep.

I'm the same way, I never get tired. I have to force myself to go to sleep every night. even when I used to do engineering work and traveled all over the world, I would work 14 hour days and still stay up late in my hotel room watching movies.

Could be a chemical imbalance in your body which could be due to almost anything, maybe as simple as your diet. Or possibly a mental unrest situation as in anxiety; stress.
try not eating a couple hours before going to bed. Be active during hours of wake, then once it nears time to sleep, rest, read a book. It should relax your body down and lower your blood pressure, causing you to more likely be tired at that time.

Maybe you should start exercising .. so you'll get tired faster during the day. You could always try a sleeping pill.
