The Siberian's coat acts as an insulator against cold AND heat. Siberian's have adapted to many climates..and while probably not the greatest choice if you live in AZ lol (tho it can be done even there) one would do fine in Chicago.

Just make sure the dog has access to plenty of water & shade during summer months and never walk or exert the animal during peak hot times of day. Perhaps offer a kiddy pool for it to wade in if it gets very hot.

We've had a Siberian Husky for seven years, and live in the Chicago area. We have her shaved in the summer. She does fine. Like another answerer here explained, the Siberian's coat works two ways - to help keep them warm in winter and to help keep them cool in the summer. Just make sure loads of water is always available to them. And you might force to make them come in sometimes - in any type of weather. They love being outside year round.

NEVER NEVER NEVER shave a siberian husky. They are a two coat breed which means that they will shed their heavy coat before the summer time and their summer coat will also help to keep them cool. I live in southern Georgia and this will be my huskies second summer here. He did great last summer. Yes it was hot but he handled it very well. Please don't ever shave a husky. It will only make them hotter.

Also did you know that dogs with longer noses stay cooler? This is because they do not sweat, but panting and drooling is what keeps them cool. The longer the nose the cooler they can make themselves. Please please do not every shave or trim a siberian husky, I will hurt them in the long run!

Siberian huskies should be able to take warm weather as long as they always have access to shade and fresh water, and preferably an air-conditioned building.

Make sure you do lots of research before getting a sibe, though. They have lots of traits that make them unsuitable for the average dog owner, like their extremely high exercise demand, their tendency to roam, their stubbornness, and their tendency to kill small animals, including cats. Be sure that a Siberian husky will match your lifestyle.

you do not need to get the coat trimmed or anything like that, they can survive in many different climates. i have a siberian i got in phoenix, az. do not walk her/him in the middle of the day, walk before 7am or after 7pm when the sun is not directly above. if you must walk between those hrs when its really hot, get a wax or paste for your dogs paws so that the asphalt or cement does not burn their paws, that was my biggest problem. even just going on a trip with my dog to petsmart where it was air conditioned, i had to run through the parking lot cause the ground burned her paws, she wanted to run!

well if you so worrying about getting a dog for this summer time then i willl just get the dog trim or groomed so that the dog hair can be little bit shorty lengeths and wouldnt feel so hot being out side or even take it out side for walkin , playing . plus if youre gotta leave the dog out door i will just buy a big cooler dog house where he or she can go in there to keep itself cool during the day with a larger water bowl with branch of ice cubs so that the dog have alot of drinking whenever feel hot beining outside and alot of foods to keep the dog not feeling hungery when youre not home . if you dont have a big back yard then i will think about getting a kennel or keep the dog inside til you come home. so they there are some shades to keep away from the heat .

Most dogs are able to adapt to a variety of temps. Tho this breed has a heavy coat for warmth in the winter time, I do not suggest you shave or trim it as the coat also helps keep the dog cool in the warmer months.

The heat is hard on all animals.. A dog with such a coat, and a dog that was bred for the colder climates... It's likely to be happy to be in the house in the air conditioning.

Im not sure, but keep it very hydrated. I think that its coat also protects it from extreme heat. Whether you buy it or not, someone is going to be walking it outside, so it might as well be you. I hope it lives a long healthy life!!

Animal fur works both ways. It keeps them cool as well as warm.
Plus, they shed as needed.
That said, watch him closely. You will know when he is too hot.
