Consumer Reports for November 2006 has ranked the Canon Powershot A620 as the best compact digital camera. It is becoming almost a legend for longevity at the top of various consumer lists. It looks like this model has been replaced by the A630, which I would expect to be just as popular. The A630 is what I chose for my adult son and I would recommend it for you, in the price range you mentioned.
I own a few Nikon DSLR's and I'd buy the Canon A630 or A640 for myself.
The A620 was rated about twice as good as any as far a battery life. I hope the A630 and A640 are just as good. Use Energizer e2 LITHIUM batteries and you will be happy with battery life.
With this camera, you will find that the included memory card is a cute little token of thanks from Canon, but not much more. Buy a 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III card. You will NEED the increased capacity and write speed to fully realize the benefits of your camera. The Ultra II would be excellent, but if you are really into video, you might prefer the faster Extreme III.

If you can find the Canon SD600 in your price range, buy it. The cost is less but Dr. Sam is right as usual. Either the Canon A630 or A640 would be fine cameras.
Canon does not make the BEST, there a lot of Bests out their including Sony and Nikon. I own a Sony CyberShot DSC-H2; and I wouldn't trade it for any other--unless it was a dslr. It's a super zoom at 12X optical zoom. If you want a Super Zoom in your price range look at Fugi FinePix S5200. It's 10X optical zoom, 5 megapixels and I paid $238. Bought it for my daughter. She loves it.Makes excellent 8X10s. Rated a "best buy" in Nov'06 Consumer Reports. Check out Website dpreview.com

From my experience, Canon is the best camera. I have Canon Digital Rebel XT 8 Megapixels, it runs great and I have taken around 20,000 pictures and have no problems at all. For a digital camera under $200, you should probably consider Canon Powershot SD600, it has small size, 6 Megapixels pictures, and it takes good pictures.

I have a sony and I love it . Mine has the mini cdr or cdrw for storage no memory to use up. I like it for vacations because I can get a huge amount of pictures on one disk and great clarity and when it's used up I just put a new disc in camera. Only 3.3 megapixils but that is al you need for a picture perfect 8X10 picture. Anyway you can now ge them on ebay rom about 75 to 175 depending on if used or new.
My daughters have the Cyber shot I think it has memory stick, also holds a great amount of pictures, and very nice pictures think they paid about 150 for them.

I always say don't overbuy.. If you're interested in just the
normal size photos 4X6's
a Canon A550 will suffice.. nice color, easy to use, AA batteries,
4X Zoom.. for everyday photos of family and friends this is the camera to get.
You can get it for $184 at J&R music world shipping included..
You can buy a nice battery charger and bigger SD card
and still have change from your original amount you want to spend.

I have a Kodak with 10x zoom and 5.0 megapixels- it is awesome and it takes awesome pictures. It is a Kadak Easyshare Z740- the best thing I ever bought myself! It holds tons of pics on its own memory!
