You're licensed, though, right?
The cops want license (on the driver, YOU), registration (on the vehicle) and proof of insurance (on the vehicle).
But will HER insurance cover an accident where you're the driver? That is not for certain - it varies policy by policy.

Your friend's policy will spell that out (it's several pages of legalese). If that doesn't reveal, your friend can ask her insurance agent. What about:
- Damage to this car (if you're at fault)
- Damage to whatever you hit (if you're at fault)
- Medical for the passengers of this car
- Medical for everyone else
Good you're thinking about this.
P.S. if you rent a ZipCar or other rent-by-the-hour city-car, insurance is included. There's an option for planned designated driving.

RE California insurance--driving a friends car???
I'm not an insured driver, but is it illigal if I drive a friend's car (that is insured) in California? What happens if i get in a wreck? I dont normally drive, but in case my friend's been drinking sometimes she'll ask me to drive her home.
thanks.

If you get into an accident you will be libel for the entire price tag. Your friend has insured herself, the vehicle is protected based on her abilities to drive. If you look at her proof of insurance card - which should be in the glove box - you will see her name on the card as the insured individual. Unless: she has purchased a balloon policy and on less she is rich I really don't think she has one... That's why they have uninsured motorist policy's to protect the owner when the vehicle is stolen and wrecked; or, if the person who stole the vehicle kills someone the owner of the vehicle can not be sued. But in your case the insurance company can state that you were not insured and there for no coverage was in effect and now the other party can come after you. And by that I mean they can get at least 25% of your pay check to repay the damages to everything and if you kill someone your going to be paying for life unless your a millionaire. Call a cab - it's cheaper.

in this situation, the motor vehicle's coverage is seen "everyday," and could be first to be in charge. IF the owner had no coverage or the financial loss replaced into over [exceeded] the everyday coverage then the driving force's coverage is seen "Secondary," and could take duty for fee of losses for which the pushed motor vehicle is deemed legally to blame [in charge]. As solutions 3 and four suggested, the coverage for the motor vehicle could be first in line [everyday], till the motor vehicle had no coverage on it, then if the driving force had an insured motor vehicle, then his coverage could shop on with [Secondary].
