Any of these will serve you well as a defensive handgun with the .45 acp leading the pack. None, however, are hunting cartridges but would do in a pinch for backup. Get instead a .357 Magnum and load it with good defensive .38 Special ammo for personal defense and when hunting, load it with .357 Magnum hunting ammunition.

Best.

Start out with the .38 spl. revolver. Something like a used mdl 10. Learn the basics of handgun use. Then check in to buying one of the autos. Having extra guns around is always a plus. I own three 38 revolvers, two .357 guns, One 40 cal., two .44 mags, one 41 mag., two 9mm, one .380, two .22, four .45ACP, and four .45 Long Colts. I reload for all of these, otherwise I go broke.

The calibers you mention are primarily defensive rounds. Not really suited for hunting. .357 Mag. is about a small as you want to go for hunting. Even then for deer sized animals you have to be a crack shot. I would not hunt with anything smaller than the 44 mag. in a handgun.

All of these will kill, HOWEVER they are not hunting cartridges. My hunting partner used a 357 mag at one time, shot a white tail doe at a little over 35 yards and the deer was able to run over 150 yards be fore going down. He had missed the heart but had hit both lungs. after that he never used anything smaller then a 44 mag. Mind you this was I 357 that was loaded to a high velocity 1500fps and 158 grain hollow point. fired out of a 8 and 3/8 inch barrel.

I use a 44 mag, or a 454 for hunting and would not consider using anything smaller in a handgun.

if u want a good reliable pistol that will not break the bank then i would have to recommend the ruger P-95. I had a 9mm and literally shot 2500 to 3000 rounds through it without the first problem. It ended up getting stolen from me. I believe i paid 350 for it. It is reasonable accurate for a novice handgun shooter like myself. It also comes new with a case and 2 15 round clips.

Try starting out with a .22 revolver. Ammo is cheap, they are pretty light, easy to use. Once you get good at that, you might want to try something like a 9 milimeter semi-automatic or a bigger revolver like a .38 special. That's how I started out and I have eventually moved on to shooting .357 and .44 magnum revolvers. Hope this helps.

Get a Revolver, but in .357 if you can. I also highly recommend stainless.......especially if you plan to carry or if you live in a humid climate.

You can shoot .38 special ammo in the .357 for practice, then practice a few rounds with .357 and load it in .357 for carry or home defense.

I like the Ruger and Smith & Wesson revolvers, although Colt and Taurus make fine revolvers as well.

Revolvers are simple and easy to use, without the destractions of safeties, slides, magazines, etc....this lets you focus on learning to hold and shoot your firearm properly.

Something like a Smith & Wesson Model 19 would be good for a first timer. It is a .357 revolver, but I'd start out using .38 ammunition. It is easy to handle, reasonably weighted, and not too much kick.

The 38 Special, revolvers are always better for beginners than auto-loaders. Get a .357 Magnum which allows you to shoot the .38 Special as well.

My favorite : M76 Valment . I know it's not a hand gun. I would recommend a 38.

There is no "best" in this list. What do you want it to do?
