Spraying a cat with water is quite nasty. Cats, as well as any other animal that normally does not like water, will be frightened by the suddenness of the spray and this will surely traumatize the animal. It is cruel.

No, it is not bad to spray a cat for disciplinary reasons.

I have always used spray water on my cats to discipline them when they where kittens and it never hurt them, and yes did they listen. I even used it on my Alaskan Malamute puppy and shot her with it as well, in the end all i would have to do is pick it up and she would stop immediately what she was doing. She got her sweet revenge on it though and ate it.

However if you are going to discipline your pets with water do not add anything into the water and also couple you spray with a sharp word like "bah" or "no". The reason for this is you don't want to keep using the water bottle for the animals whole life and so by using a sharp word as well you can reduce the spray usage and just use the word.
It will work a treat and you are not being at all cruel to your pets.

Of COURSE you don't want to hit your cat! Never, never hit your cat. The only time I'd consider a spray bottle would be to break up a potentially threatening cat fight--but I have just one cat! At a time like that, I believe it would be the only thing you could do. Seems almost everyone here is in favour of spray bottles, but I really wish you'd give a good think to two answers: DP is so very, very right. There are many ways to show your cats that certain things are "NO"--also, KristaEi is correct about them associating you with the spray bottle. To "teach" a kitty that some things simply aren't acceptable isn't really difficult. Sometimes, all it takes is a calm, stern voice (& then ignore the kitty for a little while). My kitty is inclined to "love" bites, & all I have to do is move away, say "NO" & then just leave her alone. (She usually follows me around, like, "What did I do?" but she gets the message.) If you're raising kittens, I'd suggest you REMOVE whatever you can that is causing problems, &! Unless they're really tearing each other apart, cats have a way of working things out all by themselves. Perhaps the spray bottle is an easy way; but if you want to bond with your cat/s, honestly, you don't want to use it. One more thing! Don't consider it "punishment" when you teach your cat what's okay & what's not. Punishment is for bad INTENTIONS. That simply isn't what cats do. Good luck!

EDIT: While I was typing my "diatribe," you got another good answer from boncarle. As for K.Heat or whatever, goodness! Cats on counters are DISGUSTING? I'd never let THAT person inside my door! My kitty has her breakfast tray on the counter, & if for any reason, she walks on the other counters, all I have to do is wipe them with Clorox wipes before I prepare food. Big deal. Some people think of cats as pets, property, dirty animals. My cat is my ROOMATE & I betcha better than any human would be.

She just wants to PLAY. Some cats like to play rougher then other cats. So unless she breaking the skin she's just playing. She stalks you and when you don't expect it she pounces on you gives you a quick bit, and you probably jump and make a noise. What could be more fun? And I'm betting she'll run just far enough away so you can't get her. Give her some time and she'll get tired of the game and mellow out. EDIT Try mouthwash instead of water, but if she drawing blood she's crossed the line. Some cats become crazy after they are spayed or neutered. My mom's cat would attack and draw blood, tore up a screen door did a lot of damage before they put him down. So if she doesn't calm down soon I'd say you'd have to put her down, sorry, and yes I know I'm going to get a lot the thumbs down. If she had her front claws I put her out on a farm, with permission of course, but without claws she couldn't defend herself or hunt. I'd give her a month and if she doesn't get any better I'd put her down. Again sorry.

I do not think so. I have been using it since i got my kitten, Chaos, i only had to spray him or even just by him when he was being bad a few times now usually i only have to grab the bottle and shake it while saying his name and he usually stops without me having to spray him. This is weird and is what made me start using the spray bottle, i have a female cat, Noel, who is 4yrs old and never has had kittens well Chaos would try to nurse from her she would mother him and it got to the point he made her nipples really red and it didnt look good we'd try to pick him up or move him and he'd just go right back. her nipples are better but sometimes he tries to nurse its funny now because he is bigger than her now and it looks pathetic he is a momma's boy totally even though its not his real mom you gotta love the cute little creatures:)

No. It is not cruel to spray your cat with water. The reason why is because water doesn't hurt them in any way. It may scare them a little though

It is not mean to use the spray bottle. You should only have to use it a few times and pretty soon all you will have to do is pick the bottle up and the cats will listen without you spraying them. I taught mine that way, except I snapped my fingers and then sprayed. After a few times getting sprayed after hearing me snap, all I had to do was snap and they would stop misbehaving.
Try it!
Good Luck!

It's not cruel if your not tortureing them with the spray bottles. The water is actually a good way to train them to behave.
