Because Abraham had a relationship with God, knew who He was without a doubt. He'd already failed the test once (disbelieved God that He would have a son so tried in His own power to produce one through a servant). Abraham evidently learned from his mistake and trusted God to fulfill His promise of an heir by resurrecting Isaac or giving him another legitimate heir.

What you have to consider is Abraham's history with God!
Here Abraham and his wife Sarah were infertile!
Abraham was a hundred years old, and perhaps unable to perform so as to produce offspring!
Then God's angel appear and promise that next year A. & S. are going to have a son. S. even laughs at this! So funny did it sound to this old woman!
So when A. finds that he now is able to perform (he lived to 175 fathering 6 ? more children) and he sees that S. is pregnant -- against all natural phenomenon -- his faith is firmly grounded that this god Jehovah is the true God!
For this reason, since God promised to bless all the nations through Isaac and he now told A. to kill him. A. believed God to be able to keep his first promise and believed God could therefore resurrect Isaac so as to keep his promise.

...because Abraham had faith in God.
Before going to the site Abraham told his servants: "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you."
Notice Abraham tells them, WE will come back to you.
When Issac asks his father Abraham where is the lamb for the sacrifice, Abraham says: "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son."
Note Abraham says: God will provide the lamb.
Hebrews 11:17-19 explains Abraham's faith further:
17By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

Isaac had hit puberty and wouldn't stop pestering Abraham for the keys to the camel. Abraham was hoping God was serious.

This s always a fun story, but lets ask the same about Jephthah when he DID sacrifice his daughter. Is that just telling us daughters are worth less?

beats me.
there are old stories that i have heard. about warrior peoples.
that were told by their gods to sacrifice their children for guaranteed glory in battle. and the people refused. and as soon as the people refused the gods spoke again and congratulated them for being the bravest of warriors able to challenge a god for their own judgement.
seems to me that if a god tells you to kill your own child that it must be a test. one that could only be failed by complete blind obiedence.

Right. That is some sh*t.
As a Catholic we have learned/ taught to take the Bible in a pretty figurative way. I think allot of stuff got lost in translation.
