if the women has a good relationship with her parents esp. her father, her man should inform him of his intentions, and ask for approval (not really permission per-say).

Even though i firmly believe its the daughters right to say yes or no, it shows that the man respects her enough to seek approval from the people she loves

I think it is a fabulous idea! For a man to ask her parents for her hand in marriage, that is a very good thing. Why? It shows sincerity, and it lets the gals, dad get to know this man a bit more. After all, the dad has raised his girl, no matter how old, she is his baby. He is protective ove the daughter (at least he should be). Dad's usually want the best for their "little girls". And, the mom well, she is happy for her daughter, but probably thinking of all the wedding plannin, etc. that will go on. I hope this helps on your question. Take care.

I think it is a good idea. A couple somewhat needs a parent's blessing on marriage. Even though the parents don't have much of a say in the guy you date or marry, they would still probably want to know about this.

Are you expecting them to pay for the wedding or more than half of it?

Are your parents "traditional" in mind set?

If you answered yes to the above two questions, then he'd sure as heck better ask your parents.

I'm a little old fashion...but I would take it a whole lot better if my daughter's boyfriend would ask me for her hand. It will show me that he has nerve to confront me and that he will take care of my little girl. After-all I loved her first, as the song goes, so if he wants my little girl, he better show me that he is man enough by coming to talk to me first and not just assume it is OK to take what is mine with out my permission!

I love my parents, but I would want my boyfriend to ask ME, not THEM, if he can marry me. It is a decision him and I should be making. My parents would accept my choice.

It's a gallant tradition, and it helps on starting things out on the right foot with her parents--that is, unless they say NO!

But don't do it unless you are both sure!
