PLEASE READ I am a heavy woman, 270 lbs, yet I had a surgery when I was 330, if your heart is strong then your weight is not a major concern. However, I had two hernias that were incarcerated. If your friends hernia is incarcerated then there can be serious side affects. On December 13th I went in for surgery, the hernia was choking part of my omentem, which is a piece of fat that covers the abdomen region. Because it was incarcerated it was full of infection. When they clipped it to remove the infection, I went into septic shock. My lungs quit, and my blood pressure went dangerously low. The Dr said they almost lost me several times, and my family was notified that I may not make it. Thank God I had a great Dr. Who worked diligently to keep me alive. I woke up in ICU on a ventalator. I found out later Had I repairted the hernia before it had become incarcerated and infected then I would of not had all the problems. Please have your friend get this procedure done ASAP, for letting it go creates life threating problems. Again as long as she has a strong heart and normal blood pressure, surgery should not be to much of a problem. Alot of people go through gastric bypass and weigh much more then that. Good luck. Well fatalities are always a possibility no matter what type of surgery you have and yes weight can affect a fatality rate. Make sure they do a full physical and check for hidden dangers, ie: high blood pressure , heart & lung problems , ect. Other wise I wouldnt worry , it is a very simple procedure but because of her weight it may be more complicated.

Yes, anytime anyone has surgery there is risk of dying, especially overweight people. A teen in my town just died while having a simple knee surgery from blood clot. Chances are she will be fine but it could happen.

The surgery may not kill her but grossly obese people occasionally have bloodclots and respiratory failures under anesthesia.
