I am guessing your relatives were field soldiers and not in the Air Force or Navy. When you are in the bush you go where you can. Dig a hole if there is time. Yes, I have used the folded e-tool (shovel) method. The best (most comfortable) method that I found was taking the 5.56 ball ammo crate. Once the ammo was unloaded, you could take the ends off of the box and sit on it sort of like a seat. The sleeve from a case of MREs will work too and support a small guy, but it's uncomfortable. LOL, what memories... trials of Army life!!
If you are bivouacked in one spot for awhile, latrines will be installed. There is TP in the MRE pack, but it's not much. Usually the supply sergeant will have extra rolls.
Grenada was a short invasion, yes. But there were soldiers on the move and in the woods.

Not necessarily.
Look, there are two conditions - in garrison and in the field. In garrison you have latrines (bathrooms). Every barracks and every building has them. In most training areas on a base, there are port-a-potties for you to do your business.
When you're on an extended field problem, you go in the woods unless your unit is digging a latrine. You go pretty much the same way any other person goes in the woods - you drop your pants and do your business. The reason you have a shovel is so you can cover it up after (it's unhygienic to leave it out ... and you don't want to walk through it later!). You can sit on the shovel if you want - it can make for a nice seat if you know how and is a lot better than squatting.
As for toilet paper - every MRE comes with toilet paper but they're single sheets and whispy thin. The smart soldier brings his own toilet paper in a waterproof ziploc bag. The fact that I always have real TP on me makes me very popular with other members of my unit (who don't plan ahead) in the field. ^^

Depends on your job.
Did you ask the sniper crapping question?
If youre downrage, and in a TOC, youll more than likely have some type of latrine set up. Be it the old vietnam type port-o potties with holes that lead to a giant crap bucket you burn with diesel fluid.
If youre on the front lines, youll have to dig a foxhole 100 away, unless theres latrine holes already dug.
If youre that sniper, in your pants
Part of your rolling gear is a small bunch of whipes, or a shirt if nothings available
As far as Navy and Airforce, they really dont count when the ground war starts. Its all marines and Army catching bullets

In garrison we have bathrooms just like everybody else. In the field - you just dig a small hole, squat, do your business and then cover it up.
One of the first things you learn as a soldier is to always have your own personal roll of toilet paper.
BTW - to the person who thought that Grenada was 'over by lunch' - I was there for over two months. And - FYI - we took 10% killed or wounded during the fighting. (Happens when you are outnumbered 3-1.)

on ships and installations, bases, camps, forts, there are bathrooms or heads and latrines. in the field you dig a hole and bury it and use a bush. on fob's and camps forward, there are hardened heads/latrines, porta potties and sometimes the vietnam style pottie where someone has to pour fuel on and burn.

lol! Yeah, I think they're pulling your leg. I was in the Navy and there were regular heads (bathrooms). And I've never even heard of the wiping with one sheet thing!

Just open an MRE and take a look at the amount of toilet paper in the accessory packet and then you tell us if they are messing with you.
