I have a dog that I really love, well, she barks at EVERYTHING and the neighbors complain, I don't want to get rid of her, but I have tried everything, and the only option I can think of is a bark shock collar, and I don't like the idea but I want to keep her, do you think a shock collar is bad?

The ASPCA does not recommend the use of shock collars, as they are inhumane. If you are truly in a desperate situation, get a citronella collar to stop your dog from barking. This is truly a last resort and is an effective punisher for barking for most dogs. Don't let this be the only solution though. Work hard on stopping the barking - hire a trainer who uses positive methods to help you.

There are citrinolla sprays. The dog wears a collar similar to a shock collar, and when the unit senses a bark it emits a spray of citronella under the dogs nose which dogs don't like. I've heard it is more effective then shock collars even. You can find them in most pet catalogs.
Shock collars aren't "evil". I have been shocked a few times by them. However you do need to make sure that the probes stay clean and watch the dogs neck every day as the probes can cause sores on the neck.
You may also want to view the Dog Whisperer on National Geographic. Your dog is probably not getting remotely enough exercise and this is probably the root of your problem.
Wish you the best.

I think you should try to find out why the dog is barking first, does she lack basic training? is she alone alot, bored and what sort of breed is she, barking is the primary form of communication for a dog she expresses herself that way so by putting the collar on before trying to determine why shes barking may just cause more problems
goodluck

A shock collar is probably your best bet. It doesn't hurt them like you think. If you are still not convinced, check out websites about how to control a barking dog. Having their voice box removed is not a good thing. What if you did? If someone came to break into your home, you would probably want him to bark, so check out different sites on this and find something that works for you. Good Luck!

My dog had the same problem. Before using the shock collar find a reason why she barks alot. It could be that she is bored? that something is annoying her? she is aggitated? it could be an excessive barking that a trainer needs to sort out. i found that my dog only barked at balls... so we got rid of the balls and gave him new toys.

Better than having to get rid of her.
It's not that bad, really.
Not all bark collars use shock; some use ultrasonic sound.
But your main concern should be, does it work? If it works, whatever the mechanism, she won't have to put up with it for long. She'll learn how to behave.
And she will still have a loving home.

You can get collars that squirt a spray when the dog barks. It produces a smell that dogs don't like. Alternatively you can fill a spray bottle with clean water, and every time it barks, you spray ir in the face and say NO! really aggressively.

A citronella collar is more humane...and will work just as well.
Shock collars do hurt us, and the dogs. I tried on on myself first...to see...and it did hurt *alot*, even on a lower setting.
Then I tried it on my dog..thinking her fur would buffer it....it didn't. 7 years later...she is still afraid of the room I used it one her..only one time.
This says alot about the fact that they don't at first know why it is happening..so it can cause them to be afraid of alot of things that you don't want them to be afraid of.
Not to mention, that I'd worry about it outside...since dogs are grounded to the Earth by their paws..so dew on greaa, or being in the dirt when it goes off, can kill them. (I have been an Electrician for 18 years...so I know about that).
The Citronell collar is better and less dangerous.
It sprays citronells *away* from them, but under their neck. They don't like it.
I feel for you, as I live with the loudest dog ever...in a condo.
It will work, trust me. You can buy them at petsmart, but I have found them to be cheapest on amazon.com...new or used!
Good luck.

No, I've used them and they work. The highest shock from the ones that get stronger the longer the dog barks is a monentary sting that won't hurt you or them. After awhile you can put it on the dog turned off and they are quieter.
