Is that why they're non-existant unless you make your own? But yet you can find chocolate covered apples (99% of the time marketed as caramel even though there is often no caramel to be found on them) and other toppings everywhere.

You speak the truth on this one. We live in a country of excess. There will always be someone who thinks that if caramel is good, dipping it into chocolate then nuts will make it even better. No it won't! There are still many purists out there who like just caramel and apples. We are the ones who make them ourselves. Nice to meet you.

You can usually find plain caramel apples in candy shops that specialize in homemade candies. If you go to a crafts fair around the holidays, you'll see them in abundance. It seems that the "more is better" craze has hit the caramel apple sector too. Now the belief is that not only do you need a gigantic apple, but it needs to be covered in all things coveted: caramel, three kinds of chocolate, sprinkles, nuts, chopped up candy bars and cookie bits. Kind of daunting, isn't it? I still prefer to make my own caramel and dip my own Fuji apples in it!

Caramel apples are harder to find because of freshness. "Caramel apples" made with chocolate are easier to keep fresher longer because the amount of paraffin (wax) added to the chocolate can be adjusted to assist a longer shelf life.

Paraffin can not be added to caramel because it affects the taste and texture noticeably. Also, caramel is made from burnt butter and sugar which spoils quickly. Traditional caramel apples need to be made and consumed within a week or so, which is a nearly impossible goal when trying to stock a grocery store.

A caramel apple sounds great to me. I've never heard of or seen chocolate covered apples.
