boxing is violent and deadly,so many fighters end up seriously hurt or even dead, yes they take thier risks and understand that they may be hurt.. but it seems to myself that if the standing 8 count was used more often, lifes would possibly be saved..as i fan i think thats the best thing .. we all like the vioelnt ko! but when a man is punished round after round this is when the 8 count would be justified .. thats my thoughts.
whats yout take ?

Mighty Mauler ~
In 1998 The United States Associations of Boxing Commissions eliminated it from being mandatory, it is up to the referee to use his/her judgment. I write to you what difference would it make if it were mandatory? There are referees out there that just don't know how to their jobs. Just because there will be a rule in place doesn't mean that you'd have a referee that would have the common sense to enforce it.

There was a fight last weekend in California where Victor Burgos was so outmatched against Vic Darchinyan there was no way he was going to win the fight, he had absolutely no chance of landing a one punch knockout because he never possessed the power at anytime during the bout. Burgos took a senseless beating because of referee John Schorle's incompetence.

The Referees, aside from the fighters themselves are the fighters only protection in there and are suppose to be highly trained individuals that are suppose to see the warning signs of a grossly overmatched fight and step in to stop the fight.

The cornermen and head trainer should be held responsible too. Who knows the fighter better than them? They spend weeks, months and years with their fighter. The referee has something that he/she can fall back on by not knowing how the fighter fights, does the fighter come on in the later rounds, does the fighter have to take a few punches before he/she comes roaring back? Only the cornermen know this. Any fighter worth his weight in salt will always reply "I'm alright" when asked by his cornerman "How ya doing?" They are there to protect the fighter.

You can have all the rules in place that there could ever be to protect a fighter but when the Promoters put together a fight where one fighter is truly outgunned just for the sake of ticket sales and when you have referee's that are truly incompetent and when you have cornerman who do not protect their fighters, What good are they?

There needs to reform in boxing, from the ground up, it needs to be restructured. The United States Goverment needs to intervene.

Thanks for the question Mighty Mauler.

I like the standing eight count being mandatory. It gives the referee the chance to assess a fighters condition if the referee believes the fighter is taking to much punishment without firing back.
Once again Santana's viewpoint on this subject is right on!

Yes. I think it gives refs the chance to evaluate the situation and not make a rash judgement call
