I have searched for them running FIND and looked in the RECYCLE BIN, but they aren't there. Does XP SP2 provide a way to recover them or do I need a separate program.

if you are running windows xp, there has to be over 1 GB of files just in the windows and systems programs.
you may have different partitions and are looking at a different partition drive.
if you really can't find the files through the windows folders, you may have to try DOS just to check.
Go to your task bar and click run.
enter command and hit return.
type cd:\ (note the "back slash", not a forward slash)
type dir and the screen will give you a full list of all folders and files in that directory and how much space it is taking. if there are too many that they run off the screen, type dir /p. this gives you one page at a time.
change to one of the directories where you believe there should be files.

at each level you can type cd:\ to get back to the root directory.

to get deeper into the subdirectories type cd:\subdirectory\subdirectory\ (etc)

to exit out of DOS mode type exit

If you've set up a restore point in the past you can do that. Try to boot up in safe mood and see if you can find your files.
