drinking is bad for the liver... is there a suplement or vitamin you can take that will somewhat protect you from liver failure when you get older?

review your current medications first (if there are any?) before taking any dietary supplements. as these supplements will have hazardous interactions with your meds. my mom has a fatty liver [due to her hypothyroidism and poorly controlled diabetes (type2)]. with all the meds shes taking, she decided to take liveraide/sylimarine to protect her liver from any further damage. after taking it for one week, she had blood pressure changes. the doctor told us that one of the possibilities that triggered it was silymarine's interaction with my moms meds

to answer your question:

yes there is a liver supplement. LIVERAIDE contains Silymarin, an active natural extract from milk thistle plant, it is a powerful substance composed of three flavanoid molecules (silybin, silydianin and silycristin) which have been shown to have positive effects in treating different kinds of liver diseases including hepatitis, psoriasis and cirrhosis (chronic scarring of the liver, often caused by alcoholism). silymarin is also a strong anti-oxidant more powerful than vitamin E that may help the aging process.

how does liveraide/silymarine actually help the liver?

>liveraide/silymarine protects the liver by strengthening the outer membranes of the liver cells, thereby preventing the toxins from entering the cells. it also stimulates protein synthesis in the liver cells, which helps regenerate and repair the liver.

Milk thistle. Milk thistle helps to detoxify and cleanse your liver.

Liver cleansing can also help you to remove toxins (including any traces of alcohol). But you must stop drinking. You don't want to add more toxins to your body while cleansing at the same time. It just doesn't make sense.
