My friend, I won't mention names, has a condition that I just found out about. When she goes to stretch she holds her breath uncontrolably, then she passes out and wakes up on the floor or something. In other respects she's a healthy girl, but I would like to know if anyone out there has a name for this condition.

It sounds like your friend is having what is called Vasovagal syncope. The stress from stretching and holding her breath causes a sudden drop in blood pressure and she faints.

It sounds like a heart problem almost, it doesnt matter if she is healthy because its not linked to a bad heart. I used to have a similar problem, I noticed that when I would stretch my whole body, my heart would start racing because I was holding my breath, then my skin and face would get real red, and my eyes would water then I would feel light headed to a point that I couldnt be stable.

I dont know how I fixed it, but I dont have it anymore. But from what I remember feeling and experiencing, I always thought it was my heart. However it can be something to do with her bronchial tube or lungs. It could even be a subconscious brain problem.

With the amount of things that it could be, I would highly recommend seeing a doctor, tell her to write down what she experiences in as much detail as possible, when it happens. And whatever she was doing leading up to that, and how she felt afterwards. I say write it down because its the best way for the doctor to know exactly what was going on when it all happened. Dont try to remember it, write it down.

But its nothing I would put off for any reason, and there really is no self fix on something like this. If she is passing out because she stretched, then she needs to find out from a professional why it is happening. However it will be a process, not an easy fix.

One thing that might help her out is if she practices and/or learns to sing. This builds up the lungs and teaches a person how to breath and hold more air in their lungs at all times. Hope some of this helped out. Good luck.

Uncontrolled syncape could be one name which is basically just a medical term for uncontrolled fainting. Hopefully your friend can seek help from a healthcare provider to get this under control so she doesn't get seriously injured. You're a good friend to show concern.

Sounds as if she is self inducing her fainting. Perhaps for attention?

My compliments on your concern for your friend.
