Is it okay to stray from the norm and eat other foods for breakfast (like leftovers from dinner) instead of breakfast cereal? I mean, some people have never eaten cereal before (like in foreign countries) and they're healthy, right?

Well, it is true that people who eat breakfast weigh less because of the whole metabolism thing.

But, I'm not sure about cereal. Breakfast should be healthy, and yes, you can eat other foods for breakfast as long as it's healthy. Breakfast is the start of your day, so it's rpetty important. By healthy, I mean:
~Calcium rich (milk is good)
~No more than 6 grams of fat per serving
~No more than 10 grams of sugar per serving
Some good foods are:
~Milk
~Fruit
~Fat free yogurt
~Oatmeal
My advice is to eat breakfast no more than 300 calories.

You can have whatever you want for breakfast. The point to breakfast is that it sets the tone for your whole day. It begins the insulin cycle that will regulate your appetite. Try to have a balanced breakfast, which means, lean protein and carbs for energy. Have turkey and stuffing if you want, just avoid too much fat, just like any diet.

Not if you eat highly sweetened cereals contain High Fructose Corn Syrup and little or no fiber. These types of cereals cause sugar to spike resulting in increase in insulin which causes the body to convert the excess sugar to fat. Stick to high fiber cereals with low fat milk and it is good start to keeping metabolism high and avoiding spikes in sugar and insulin.
