How many time have you heard some grandparents rant about how it's their job to spoil their grandkids. I'm not questioning their love which is undeniable, definitely questioning the sense of the statement. Spoiled is ruined, and grandparents that do are just Grams and Gramps as the word parent gets removed from their names.

My mother in law is not capable of saying no or offering any kind of guidance (as a parent would), she loves the heck out of all her grandchildren but because of her lack of parenting, I believe the net impact of her contact is negative.

If you think I oppose grandparents spoiling their grandkids with affection then wise up, that's really quite silly. What I oppose is teaching not to appreciate by giving too much materialistically and stunting maturity by giving too little in terms of giving direction and growth. I didn't experience it and neither have my kids because I had the good sense to nip it in the bud. I sure do see it though and I think its pathetic.

what it comes down to is this...
Grandparents have more time for their grandkids then what they did for their own kids, because of work comittments etc. All they are doing is making up for the time they didn't get to spend with their own kids. It's not always spoiling them with possessions, but most of the time it's just spoiling them with affection, and that is what grandparents are for

Be glad the children have Grandparent's, lot of children do not. The word spoiled is usually used by ungrateful parents of the child. While spoiled does seem ruined, like fuzzy cheese, the fuzz means nothing, cheese can be eat after removing the fuzz, and it it totally safe. Grandparents might use that word, but what it really means is, I adore this beautiful child because this child is the child of my own child and is special above all.

Spoining kids only ruins them if it is done all the time every day by their parents. Almost every grandparent spoils their grandchildren, I am sure your grandparents let you do thing and gave you things your parents wouldnt, are you saying you are a ruined person because of this.

wow, someone either had a lot of siblings, or grandparents who didn't care. obviously, its not a reference to *actually* spoiling the kids. grandparents only give presents and stuff to kids who appreciate it and are not bratty little people. that's all. of course they say that it's their job to spoil the kids, meaning they get them presents for no reason, not that they turn them into whiny, demanding little control freaks.

Well, it is their job to overlook their children, and how he/she raises their child...
If the grandkid is not happy with the parents, then they go to grandparents for advice, or to friends...
The grandparents, spoil the kid, in order to make the mother/father think that they did something wrong... and that the kid likes the way the grandparents are doing things....
IDK, but when I get older, my kids are going to have a good life... and my grandkids will have an even better one...

i feel your pain. then after they spoil your kids they have the audacity to question your ability to raise your own children in such a disruptive and impolite manner.

Because they worked the majority of their lives to take care of you. Now its their time to take it easy and enjoy life. You should be a little more grateful.

A least some of them see it as their last golden opportunity to "pay their kids back" for not living the way they wanted them to !!!
