I shoot everything from my kids playing sports to landscape and mostly family shots. What is the most versitile lens? I don't like switching them in and out. I do have a 70mm-200mm

One of our devoted Canon users recommended the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (28-135 equiv.) ($500) as a good "walk around" lens.

Since you have the 70-200 lens, this seems like it would be a nice compliment to that lens, giving you coverage down in the bottom range.

I have an 18-200 Nikon lens that is very useful for general shooting. I do not see that Canon makes one, but perhaps I am just missing it. On your camera, this would be an equivalent of 29 mm to 320 mm and that is quite a good range for the subjects you mention.

If Canon does not make this length, I see that the Sigma is popular and reviews well. Tamron also makes an 18-200, but I have not read any reviews on the lens yet.

See if you find anything here:

The 70 to 200 should work just fine. It's a portrait lense and brings in distance.

You only need the other lens if you want wider angels for the Grand Canyon.

The points above are well taken. The 35 to 135 is nice. I use one all the time on my Minolta. It's a faster lens.

I do not know how much your willing to spend. I personally use the 24-105mm f/4 L lens. It has great quality pictures. But if you want a lens you probably will never take off our camera for a great deal of time is the 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS, thats if you have $2000 to lay on a lens. Its not always the most appealing lens either because it is a push pull system but if you want huge versitlity then this lens is for you.

It really depends on what you will use the lens for.

I have a 20D, my fav lens is the EF 28 - 135 IS. On our cameras we get a little extra focal length with the focal converstion so its more like a 44 - 218 or something like that. Anways the Image Stabelizer is awesome
