Why would a real stone floor hurt a dogs feet anymore than taking it for a walk on the sidewalk??
I think your dog will be fine.

How big is the dog and how much does he run around on the floor.? I think you should get the stone floor if thats what you want. It's your house and a stone floor would look great. If you have a large dog and live in a warm climate the dog will love the floor because it will stay cool. A stone floor will also add market value as oppose to a vinyl "look a like" floor. Go for the stone!!!

The best thing you can do for a dog is put down carpets. This allows them traction and keeps them from slipping and sliding. Having said that, we have stone floors and three dogs. No problem. As others have mentioned, dogs walk on sidewalks. Also, dogs ancestors, wolves, walked on stone, rock, sand, dirt, water and anything else you can imagine. But expect them to have trouble getting up and running, especially running and trying to turn.

I believe that your dog's feet will get used to the floor. After all, dogs were wild animals before humans domesticated them. When they are outside they walk on rocks, gravel, cement, etc.

stone floor sounds good , and it shouldnt hurt their paws...but masonry floors are always cold so unless you have a really warm basement i would have electric radiant heat installed under the stones, once they heat up shouldnt cost much to keep them warm...
