3 guys go to a motel for a convention. They decide to share a room to save money. The room is $30, so they all pay $10. After they pay and go to their room the desk clerk realizes he did not give them the appropriate rate. The rate for the conventioners is $25. The clerk gives the bellboy $5 and tells him to take it to the guys. The bellboy does not know how to divide $5 evenly 3 ways so he gives each of them $1 and keeps $2 as a tip. Now each guys has paid $9 for the room. So, 9 x 3 is $27. Add the $2 the bellboy kept is $29. Where is the other dollar??

It didn't go anywhere. The riddle is designed in such a way so it cannot be answered by working it that way.

The guys pay $30, but it's only $25, so the clerk hands back $5. If the bellboy had split it evenly, it would be 1.66 each. Since he did not split it evenly, you have $3 to each man, and $2 to the bellboy, and $25 to the clerk. The riddle is that the men did NOT end up paying $9 each, but $8.33. That last $1 is subconsciously rounded up and split evenly among the guys, but not recalled when you later try to do the math. Simply recall that 8x3 is 24, so that last dollar must be split among them. Now the reason why I get a Golden Pickle is because I would have been enough of a gentleman to PAY THE D@MN DOLLAR!

the missing dollar is split into 3 between the roomates. The bellboy kept 2 dollars. So everything must add up to 28 right? you subtracted 1 from 10 to get 9, then you multiplied 9 by 3 to get 27, instead you were supposed to multiply 9.3333 by 3 because since the bellboy kept 2 dollars, the new total is 28, then you must account for this by dividing 28 by 30 which equals 0.93333. Now multiply 0.93333 with 10 because you divided 28 by 30 and you need to find the new value each roomate payed for the room, that equals 9.3333. Now 9.3333 dollars multiply with 3 roomates to get a total of 28 dollars. There is your solution. Nothing else makes sense.

the room rate becomes 25 out of the 5 returned 3 is given to the men and the bell boy keeps 2 so it would be 30-5=25. 25+3=28. 28+2=30 the equation with 27 and 29 is wrong no missing dollar just tricky math.

there is in someone's pocket (one of the three boys)
The thing is its 25 + the bellboy's tip, not 27...

30 dollars payed: bellboy has 5
gives one to each person (2 dollars left in bellboy's hand) that makes it 27 (the bellboy doesn't take 2 after that...)

Remaining $2 is with the boy.

well considering the room is $25 and he gives back $3 that totals $28 not $27 so the $2 tip equals $30

the question reads wrong... when the clerk realizes they were overcharged, and says give back $5, then the room rate was only $25... 25 + the 3 the guys got back + the 2 that was pocketed = $30

now gimmie that pickle

you don't add the $2 the bellboy kept...you subtract it from 27, making 25.

Once again the math is wrong.

25+1+1+1=28
28+2=30
