If two or three people are together, they will invariably walk side by side and prevent faster walkers behind them from passing. They are totally oblivious to anyone else. This makes for some nasty confrontations. Why don't these people move over and allow others to pass?

They are complete idiots. What i do is i purposely walk very close to them (as if i am listening to their conversation) and make tsk tsk sounds and other sound to show that I am irritated. Normally one of them will turn and make way for me to cross.

Most people have no sense of space, they'll walk in the middle of a wide sidewalk even when they're alone, or stop in doorways, or leave their shopping cart in the middle of the alley while studying the products at length... they just don't notice these kind of things. If a sidewalk is narrow you have no choice but walking so you take up all of it, or if indeed you're talking to someone I can understand you're walking next to them, but plenty of people manage to block a pretty wide sidewalk all by themselves by walking in the exact center, or having a leashed dog sniffling on the other side so the leash blocks it, etc, etc. I don't see the use of that; I personally think it's much more comfortable to walk on the right side of the sidewalk just like you'd drive on the right side of the road rather than in the middle.... that way I can usually walk undisturbed (apart from when others are blocking everything) while if you're trying to walk in the middle, you have to divert your way for everyone either passing or coming from the other direction.

Yes, we are totally oblivious to anyone else. I, honestly, have never given that any thought when I am walking any where. I don't think about the people behind me. I am sure a lot of others don't either. I am sorry about that and I will watch in the future.
But, don't you dare stop your cart in the grocery store aisle to chat with someone or I will run over your heel and that will hurt very bad.

When you are walking along with a friend and talking it is easier to walk side by side and look at one another occasionally instead of talking to ones back or having to turn around to see their face. A simple excuse me, may I pass or stepping around them off the sidewalk would take care of the situation in a non confrontational manner. They often don't realize that someone is in a great rush behind them.

Hi

I think they don't realize it at times....it is like the people that stop right in the middle during a rush of people...like leaving a train station..lol...

next time ask them..put them in a crazy spot ...to answer a question..then give them 10 points if the answer is intelligent..i once asked someone a question like this...but it was on an escalator...not on a side walk..and their answer was..there were no people when they got on..so they forgot to look back..it was a long escalator! good answer i thought...usually people just look forward and not behind them...

an undemanding "excuse me" oftentimes seems after this. Repeat as mandatory. human beings walk facet-by using-facet simply by fact it makes communication much less annoying. think of roughly it - how many conversations have you ever had the place somebody is status at the back of you?

Its a situation where you all need to compromise, if they dont see you say excuse me or go around if they do they should move. its a public pathway if they are there first and dont want to move then go around, very simple.
