.357 Desert Eagle would be my gun of choice , I wish I could get a concealed weapons permit here in California , but I guess you have to be a celebrity with tons of cash to do that.

I carry virtually all the time a S&W J frame 5 shot .38 revolver (and yes there is a 9mm compact revolver from S&W like old Fuzz said). I carry it in my front right pocket most of the time, or in a side cargo pocket. It has a partially bobbed hammer to make it less prone to snagging on clothes. I also have a Fobus paddle holster for it.
I also have a Springfield Armory XD45 which I have been known to carry in a fanny pack, or in the small of my back in a inside the pants holster. During cold weather I wear the XD 45 in a Fobus paddle holster on my right side.
I usually carry the 45 when I am responding to disturbance calls, etc. at my off-duty security job (well now it's not off-duty since I retired it's just a job I guess).
Ankle holsters are Ok if you don't need the weapon in a hurry, I used one for the airweight chief when it was my backup weapon.

I carry a Springfield Micro 1911 in an inside the waistband holster.
Realize that people are put together different, have different styles of dress and personal preference. Most people who carry a concealed weapon a lot have a drawer full of holsters they go through before they find one they can live with.
Carrying full time is rather a pain. It requires commitment, discipline and forethought. While it seems easier to carry in colder climates, try to pull that thing out under three layers of clothes while wearing heavy gloves. On the other hand, when you are dressed in shorts and a tee shirt, a place to carry also becomes rather difficult to find.
Once you settle on method of carry, try to stick with it. Don't have a different place to carry your gun for every day of the week. You'll need to consult a calendar before you can find the thing when you need it.
Good luck

cdwjava gave a great answer on the how to carry so I am not going to get into that part of the question.
As for the weapon, I carry a Springfield Micro Compact 1911 in a .45 cal. It is small and very reliable. Also has plenty of safety's with it.
Again make sure that you practice pulling you weapon no mater how you are carrying it. A weapon you can't get to is as good as not having one.

I have two I carry, depending on what I am wearing. My Taurus 745, 45ACP, is in an Inside the Waistband holster and carried behind my right hip. On other occasions I carry a Smith & Wesson, J-frame, mdl 940, 9mm revolver in a pocket holster, in my right front pants pocket.
The 940 isn't made anymore and used ones are pricey. The 640, a 38 spl., is just as good.

It depends ... where are you going with it?
I sometimes have mine in a fanny pack, sometimes in a waistband holster, sometimes an ankle holster, and sometimes a soft holster outside my belt under a baggy shirt or sweater. It really depends on the weather and the purpose.
I carry an assortment of .45s (I have three different ones) for my off duty weapons.
No matter HOW you carry it, you should practice extensively to draw and aim your firearm from wherever you will be carrying it. If you have not practiced draw, aim, and (hopefully) fire from wherever you conceal your weapon, you may be in a world of hurt when (God forbid) the time comes that you actually need it and can't figure out how to draw it under stress.

A snubbie you can get a pocket holster

Off-duty I carrry either behind the back or in a pancake holster. My off-duty carries are either a 1911 or Sig. P-220, both .45.

asking which weapon is right for you is like asking who would be the best spouse. it really comes down to a few basic pointers. first you want all the can you can safely handle. i stay away from 380's and smaller. second what holster, ankle strap, fanny pack...etc is comfortable for you. i carry a .40 cal s&w compact in a s.o.b. (small of the back) holster. easy access, easy concealment, and the .40 is going to give me enough stopping power should i ever need it. god forbid.
