or, if you've had it before, what was your reaction?
and would if be different if you knew it was deadly in your case?
i'd probably be shocked for a while and then start crying like forever, even if i knew i was going to be better. just the thought having surgery and getting chemo (losing my hair and becoming really weak) would freak me out.
i don't mean for this to be offensive for people who have had cancer, this is a serious question.

It happened to my son and the feeling is total, total devastation. We sat in a room crowded with well meaning doctors, social worker, nurses . . all part of an oncology pediatric team . . very compassionate people telling us that our precious son had a rare stage IV abdominal sarcoma. There were no tears . . there were questions . . such as . . can this be treated? But he had . . so . . so many tumors . . some as large as volley balls . . pushing his heart out of place.
I felt so sick . . so terrified of losing my child. I cannot even begin to tell you what it was like. But we determined right at that moment to do the best that we could no matter what direction this journey took us on. We would travel whatever path that fate offered us . . and help our son at every step of the way. The days and weeks that followed were a bittersweet mix of joy that our son was still with us and terror that we would lose him. And . . we felt total helplessness.

The only real way to live through the moments, hours, and days of not knowing if your son is going to live or die is to just live each moment, each hour, and each day . . and never look into the future.

My son did better than expected and after two years he is still here. He's had excellent quality of life, graduated from high school, visits friends, traveled across country, and has take college courses. It has not been easy and we feel like we live on the edge of a knife. There is no guarantee with cancer. None. But we still need to get up and face every day and live life the best way that we can under horrific circumstances. We do not know yet how this story will end . . . as my son faces surgery and stem cell rescue in the next few weeks.

So, go and live your life the best way that you can. Enjoy each day. We do. Every minute that we have with this kid is precious. He is remarkable and a great joy. And, no matter what happens we will always cherish this time we've all had together.

Peace to you.

If i found out..that i have cancer..nothing will change in my life.
I'll continue doing all my regular activities...visit my friends...go out to the mall...and do whatever.
You see, with or without it, life goes on. So what if my doctor says that i have a certain amount of time left, here on this world...I won't let it put me down. I'll just go through any other day..as i had always had.

-peace :D

I didn't have time to cry. I was still nursing my 3 month old daughter when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
I knew I had to be strong for my family. And I promised my baby I wouldn't leave her motherless.
That was almost 8 years ago. So I can now say I am a cancer survivor.
