The more you answer in a particular category, and the more Best Answers you get (not the percentage) the more likely you are to get a "top contributor" badge next to your name, up to 3 categories. Levels, and points have nothing to do with it. I have it for answering in Yahoo 360 and Yahoo Answers categories, neither of which am I on the leaderboard, but I have been answering alot of questions in these categories recently. I do lead the category DIY and I do not have "top contributor" for that category, but I haven't answered much in that one for a while.

The Yamster says:
A Top Contributor is an Answerer whose Q&A shows that they are knowledgeable in a specific category. You can become a top contributor in up to three categories. The better your contributions are in any respective category, the more likely you'll become a Top Contributor for that category.
The top contributor badge is dynamic —you earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a particular category. The more actively you contribute, the more likely you will earn a badge. Just like featured users or category leaders, it's another way to feature community members who might otherwise be overlooked.
We basically take an Answerer's overall contributions on Answers in each individual category, toss them into a hamster wheel, and the ones that manage to stay on the wheel become Top Contributers.

It either has to do with the amount of answers submitted in a certain category or the amount of BEST answers received in a certain category. I'm not sure... though I think it's just "answers submitted" because I've noticed people with an orange tag and they only have 5% Best Answer ratio.

I believe TC is when you answer (or get many best answers) in a particular category. You, you seem to be a TC in Religion.
To me it seems like Yahoo is making us all the "Essjays" of the Answers community.

I think that it means that we spend too much time in one section. Mine says singles and dating, but that doesn't mean that I really know that much about singles and dating. I just tell people when they're being stupid.
I think you have to answer a certain amount of questions in a certain section. Beats me.

"A Top Contributor is someone who is knowledgable in a particular category".
Let your cursor hover over anyone's badge and it'll tell you.

All I know is that the damn thing cuts off the last letter of my screen name. :(
Oh well, I guess it is a good way to tell who the regulars are.

I think its for those who ask many questions!
Without the *contribution* of askers there would be no answers!
