blueblue gives you good advice. One other thing that I would suggest, is that when you use whichever shampoo you choose, massage it in well and let it sit on your scalp for a few minutes. That allows the medicine to penetrate into the sebum and loosen it up and allow it to be rinsed away. Also, rinse very, very well. Sometimes part of the problem with dandruff is people not rinsing their scalp and hair good enough to get rid of all the shampoo residue. If you find that your hair is getting dry, go ahead and use conditioners, but only put it onto the dry ends, not on the scalp. Your scalp doesn't need anymore oil.

Dandruff isn't actually caused by dry skin or not showering, it's a condition called seborrheic dermatitis that produces an overabundance of oil (sebum) in the skin, but also creates the flakes, from irritation sloughing. The skin can often be greasy and scaly in addition to flaky. You can also experience it on other parts of your body, like your chest or face (around the nose is somewhat common). Moisturizing can make it worse, but doctors sometimes prescribe a steroid cream and/or an antifungal cream to use for it on your body or face.
Since it can be cause by fungus as well as hormones/no particular reason, doctors usually recommend an antifungal dandruff shampoo like Nizoral (which now has an over-the-counter strength in addition to a prescription strength). If you do buy that one, get the larger bottle (open the box of the smaller one to see how small it is and you'll know why!) Please don't try to condition it away! Remember, moisturizing can make it worse. So can overwashing with the wrong shampoos. Nizoral is the absolute best, and the one doctors recommend most, but if for some reason you can't find it (I've seen it at CVS, Walgreens, Duane Reade, and Safeway, so it shouldn't be a problem) or don't want it, try a dandruff shampoo with an ingredient other than the one you have used, which is pyrithione zinc. Neutrogena's T-Gel uses a tar chemical instead, and that works for some people. There are also ones with salicylic acid in them, but they just exfoliate, and for a case as severe as yours sounds, I wouldn't recommend it. I strongly urge you to use the Nizoral, actually.
You can read about it here:
http://familydoctor.org/157.xml
but it seems that the doctor wrote the recommendations for treatments before Nizoral was made non-prescription. He talks about it in the section about seborrheic dermatitis in babies, but please trust me, it is what doctors recommend for severe dandruff in adults. And you can see it's gentle enough for babies with that recommendation. :)

If you mean you have african american hair the best thing for you to use is tea tree shampoo. Its by Paul Mitchell. It will get rid of most of the dandruff and then use a conditioner then use a little oil in your hair.Super skinny or oil sheen.Rub it into your scalp a little.Wash your hair twice then dont wash it with really hot water .You probably could wait more than every other day .Go about 2 to 3 days then shampoo. This will help .You can still shower and do your hair after the shower as normal just put more oil in it after the shower.

Hair & Scalp- Seborrheic Dermatitis (Severe Dandruff)
Brijette of Bettendorf, Iowa writes us, "My Chiropractor told me to use vinegar on my baby girl's cradle cap. I applied it straight and let it sit for 10 minutes before her bath. I've done this only four times now and her cradle cap is almost gone already!!! Maybe this straight vinegar treatment could work for other scalp problems as well."
Anne writes, " I have dark hair which is very oily. I use apple cider vinegar as a hair rinse, it helps to dissolve buildup, which results in much shinier hair. It has also been very beneficial for my dandruff."
A reader from Boston, MA writes, "I'm so happy that I found this site. I have applied straight apple cider vinegar 30 min before washing my hair and the flaking is almost gone. It has taken five treatments and WOW what a difference. It make my hair shiny too (extra bonus)."
Now science tells us that it promotes blood circulation in the small blood capillaries that irrigate the skin. It is also antiseptic, combating yeasts, viruses, and bacteria that can cause infection.
Apple cider vinegar is rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, helping to dissolve fatty deposits on the skin’s surface and reducing scaly conditions, promoting a softer, smoother appearance. This miracle fluid also regulates the pH of the skin.
You won’t believe how many ways apple cider vinegar can be used to promote healthier skin and hair! Find out some of the couldn’t-be-simpler ways to put it to work for you, below:
Dandruff fighter: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar to 3 parts warm water to balance scalp pH and control dandruff. You can also apply undiluted vinegar to the scalp. Allow it to penetrate, then shampoo with a mild shampoo.

shampoo and condition every day. your scalp is dry. the conditioner will moisturize your scalp while daily shampooing will wash away any existing flakes.
whoa!!! wait a second! do you mean that you have black colored hair, or that you are black? i'm sorry. i may have misspoke. if you are black and have dandruff, you are shampooing much too often. you should only be shampooing once a week and properly greasing your hair.
