natural consequences- meaning the consequence that is direct from the action, not given by someone else. Like...spilling the milk, then it's gone (that was a good example). If you throw a tantrum and bang your head on the ground, then it's going to hurt! If you hit your friends, they are not going to want to play with you. So, the teacher (or parent) is not actually punishing the child, but there are still consequesces for their actions. The way real life works. Very valuable for kids to learn this early. Of course...sometimes there have to be unnatural consequences (like time-outs).

what exactly do you mean natural consequences?
I am a preschool teacher and if by natural you mean how do we teach the children the diffrence between right and wrong we get down to there level using a firm voice but not yelling at them as that means that you have lost control.we explain that what they have done is wrong and why they shpuldn't do it (eg we don't climb on the tables because you WILL fall and hurt yourself you CAN bump your head and it makes ME sad when you don't lissen to MY words
By really emphising the words in caps lock they are more likely to pay attention to what your saying.
Another trick we use is the 3 strikes and your out rule they do something you don't like you walk over get down tell them why they shouldn't do it remember to use your emotions to explain that it makes you angry ,sad, upset, they continue you go over to them get down to there level say i have already asked you once not to do ....... you do that again and you can go into thinking time remember thinking time is not fun time so they sit nothing to play with and you pay no attention to them depending on age thinking time is one min per there age so if the child is 3 they sit in the same spot for three min s good luck hope this helps.

Natural consequences is if the child purposely spills her milk, do not give her more milk. The natural consequence is she spilled the milk and now it is gone. If she breaks a toy on purpose the toy is broken, don't buy her a new one.
