I'm unable to swallow large pills, so I have to crush them. What liquid can I add them to that will mask their horrible taste?

First, you have to check compatibilities, since grapefruit juice covers well but interferes with several medications. The soft drink Fresca, which seems to be hard to find these days, is known to cover some really nasty drugs. I haven't tried Fresca since back in the '70's, but as I remember it, I'd rather taste the drug. Sometimes it's better to admit defeat, as nothing works very well with potassium supplements, and OJ and a brief gagging period is the best you can manage. Various pudding flavors sometimes work, too.

root beer is known for its powerful taste, but im not sure about its effect on the medicine (it might render it somewhat less effective).

First, are they crushable? Not all pills are to be crushed. Please read the directions and call the Dr. or Pharmacist to be sure you can safely. If they are crushable you can mix them in peanut butter, jelly, apple sauce, jello, or ice cream.
