What is the purpose of the virtual world? If we place an artificial intelligence program with self replicating and decision making capabilities in the virtual world would it be aware of our dimensions? If it found fragments of more primitive programs would it think it evolved from them, rather than being created?

I think if there were more order to life as there is with a created cyber world, that question would apply. But being as there is only very limited order, especially in regard to the lives of very minute part of the actual 'creation', the little sect of cyber 'people', the question is moot.
Can an advanced program evolve and gain intelligence on it's own? possibly.
and scary.

great question by the way.

Only if it was programmed to question the existence of more primitive ones.

Programs or AIs are nowhere near this sort of awareness, yet.

This universe existed much longer than people. Why did it exist if there was no one to appreciate it? Because it has nothing to do with us. If a tree falls in a forest, does anyone care? etc etc
