my roommate recently moved out and took her cat with her. now my little man is lonely and less active. I try to play with him as much as possible but I can't be home ALL the time. Its to the point that he even wakes me up in the middle of the night to play! is there anything I can do to help him stay active and playful even while i'm not home? perhaps a toy you can recommend that he can play on his own? (I cannot afford to get him another cat friend)

I know this sounds crazy but have you tried leaving the TV on for him??? I leave a radio on for my dogs and TV or radio on for my rats and my cat.

awww.... poor little kitty. Yes, he will be missing his freind but he wil bounce back after a few weeks. Getting him interractive toys is a great way to keep him busy while you are at work. Toys that a singe kitty may find interesting:
1. Cat Whack Toy: this year's best new activity toy. Cat Whack bobs back and forth as your kitty bats at the rubber tipped toy. The weighted bottom keeps the ball standing upright and rocks back and forth as your cat bats away. No batteries required.
2. Race-N-Chase cat toy: offers key features to spark cat's interest and provide hours of entertainment. Cats are intrigued by the squeaking mouse and the spinning motion that spins easily with just one swipe of the paw. Top and side openings provide easy access to the colorful cloth mouse.

3. Motorized Thing in the Bag: Inside the bag are crinkly-sounding materials and a randomly activated motor that makes the “thing” come alive. The On and Off motion will have your cat wondering what’s rustling inside for hours! Requires three AA batteries (not included).

Play Tip: Allow your cat to explore this toy before turning on the motor. Do not turn toy on for the first time when kitty is exploring...that's not funny, it's mean!

4. Flying Bug Jar: Powered by a small fan, these “bugs” come alive and circulate around and around inside the jar! Bug Jar is specially-weighted and designed on a rocking base, allowing kitty to swat and play endlessly without tipping the jar over. An added feature for the cat that never sleeps, “bugs” can be charged under a light to GLOW-in-the-dark. Requires four AA batteries.

A Cat Tree or Gym wil also be a great play structure for your kitty especialy if you position it where he can look out a window as he sits on one of the tree's perches.

I have a three year old Kitty named Puss Puss and she was so sad and lonely until I found Cubbie a stray kitten. Now she is very active, happy, and lovable. I am a very poor college student but I decided to cut down on extras so that I could afford another cat. I just buy the larger bags of litter and the bulk cans of food. Basically I am spending the same because when you buy bulk it is cheeper. The only expensive thing was taking him to the vet for his check up. If you adopt a kitten then the cost is included in the fee. Save up some money and adopt a kitty. It is the only fair option for your cat. it is not fair to isolate your kitty once it was use to companionship. Trust me Puss Puss is a totally new cat since Cub came along. I cannot recommend any toys because I tried everything with Puss...catnip, marty mouse, fur mice, a cat tree, etc.. and nothing seemed to perk her up. Also leaving the tv on is not a good idea because cats get annoyed by loud noises but maybe your tv on low volume could be somewhat helpful. The best toy is another feline....if I can afford another cat (I am very poor but my cats are well cared for) then I know you can as well. It just takes some money management and lots of love. Good luck and God Bless!

Too bad you can't afford another cat. There are lots of little kitties at animal shelters who are waiting for good homes. Get him some squeaky toys he can play with.

My cat loves toys that have cat nip in them. They give him extra energy. You can buy it in all kinds of toys. You can even by it and spread it around his food area. I had a cat that use to get the bag down if I left it out and spread it every where. She loved that stuff! Good luck. Give him extra extra love. Oh and like some one else posted leave the tv on for him! My mom does it for her dog and cat! LOL!

Maybe the kind of toy you stick to the window and a string with a little fuzzy ball comes down! my kitten loves that.
