Oh my god... I didn't take his license plate nor his drivers license.... And about the scratch is no more than half an inch. Also my car was parked when this occured. It was parked too close to his car and my son accidently slammed into it. But how the hell can a little scratch like that go up to 1700 bucks? Also what can he do with my driver license? Is there something he can do with it that I need to know about? Thanks for your help.

Thanks so much for all of your informations. I'm going to report to my insurance company about this.
But there is still one thing that worries me. Can he do anything with my drive license? Anything I should be worried about? Thanks.

The guy is trying to get some pocket money off of you, $1700 is WAY too much for a small scratch.
An agressive estimate would be $500, a realistic estimate would be more around $100 or less if he has a scratch repair guy to fix it. They do just as good of work as a body shop, only a lot quicker and usually cheaper. Or, a tube of touch-up paint is about $10 or less and he could touch it up himself.
Actually, $1700 would be too expensive to replace the entire door!
I'd say to tell him no way you're going to pay that much for a scratch, and he can talk to your insurance agent if he really thinks a small scratch will cost that much to repair.
Without the report, he shouldn't get very far with your insurance company. You can give them your version, and it will be his version against your version of what happened.
Might want to go ahead and give your insurance agent a heads up on what's going on and tell them what happened and what this guy is looking for.

He needs to file against your insurance company. If there is no police report he will have difficulty getting anything. Why did you give him your license. You were not driving when your child opened the door you were parked. was he parked too close to the line? $1700 is about right for a paint scrape but the insurance would decide how much he should get, whether the door gets replaced or they use touch up paint. You really should not have given him your license

This actually happened to us a few years ago. I hope you got his driver's license, plate and vin number on the car he was driving. And did you take a picture of the damage.
When we called the police, the police told us that it is common for some people to switch plates on the slightly damaged car with one that has much more damaged.
We took picture of the car, plate and vin number.
If you didn't do above, what's done is done. Tell him that you want three estimates from reliable body shops for painting and repair. Then tell him that he is to go to the lowest priced shop and you will pay the shop directly after the work is done to your satisfaction (I'm willing to bet that he wants to pocket the money and not get the repair done). If he refuses tell him that you now want a police report and it will go to your insurance company.
There are a lot of people out there that want to separate you from your money so good luck.

Sounds like someone is trying to intimidate you. He had no right to ask for your license or any other personal information. There was no moving violation involved. Tell him that if he wants to make a claim - do it through your insurance company. Give him ONLY your insurance information. If he has a legitimate claim the insurance will take care of it. If he does not have a legitimate claim they will tell him so. That is what you pay your insurance company to do.

you should ask him if he got three quotes. if a little scratch cost $1700 u want to see the bill for it. if the bill is $1700 for a scratch i would then b sus about it just in case the panel beater is the dudes friend and upped the price. also check that the whole car wasn't sprayed for that amount.
in the end anyway i would not pay it and take it to court and let a judge spin his head over it.
$1700 sounds sus to me!!!!

I can't answer on this specific incidence, but this is why I always carry a cheap disposable camera in my vehicles.
You could have photoed the license plate, and the damage.

Did you have insurance? You should just have to pay your deductable. You give your insurance company the deductable and they give him $1700, if it really costs that
