It really depends on what color your hair is now, and what color you've been highlighting. If you put black over a lighter color, it will "grab" onto the lighter highlighted strands more because the cuticle of your hair is damaged in those areas, more so than in the areas you have not been highlighting.

At first, you will have good coverage all over and it will appear pretty even. As time goes by and you wash and style it, the areas you have highlighted will fade faster than the other areas. You may have to re-color every 6 weeks or so.

Be SURE you want to go black before you do it. Stripping hair of a dark color is very damaging and the areas that are highlighted now may turn a nasty brassy green color.

I want to let you know to do this process in a salon. The reason being is that you can go get box dye but a lot of box dyes have undertones that could turn your hair green/blue. By going to a salon they will put a filler on so your undertones in your hair won't come through and the color will last longer and be more vibrant. To answer your question yes it will work but just know that black bleeds for a day or two.
Good Luck!!! Hope this helps.

If you color your hair at home, I suggest either Feria or L'Oreal Preferences. And black dye covers pretty much everything, so you don't need to worry about having different tones to your hair. Good luck!
