The only purpose religion serves is to give people something to do on Sunday morning. If you really get down to it and look at how many people that go to church actually follow the religion outside of church. I was outside of one once and the preacher came out and got into his car. When he passed me he was listening to music with cussing. I don't think that I would personally want to follow the example of someone who didn't even believe in what he preached.

As long as people are not receiving the love, acceptance, and protection they need, they will cry out to an imaginary entity that, even if it did exist, would be nothing more than a deadbeat with a demented martyr for a son and a bunch of corrupt servants. It is actually a good thing that it doesn't exist, and that it's impossible to be loved by it, even after you die. What kind of toxic love would that be?

For Pure and True Religion

James 1:27

27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Lots of purposes that are good!

It gives people a social network
A sense of community
A purpose
Provides a moral code
Provides comfort in times of crisis.

These things are what helped it survive through all these years. I don't think, therefore, because it does some good things, it is truth though.

The Bible which I believe is the Word of God is the words of a Lawgiver, a Healer, a Friend and a Father. He tells you if you don't want this, then do this. His word is truth. He even tells you that a curse without a cause does not come to you. So if you have problems look for the cause and the answers are in the Bible, God's word.

Yes. Would you like to know what it is?

I know my answer is not in sync with your question, but I heard,"Does religion serve a purpose?"

Everything needs order - including beliefs.

Religion serves that very purpose...Remember, religion encompasses any belief structure.

So, in case you did not understand that statement, RELIGION brings order to what otherwise would be chaos.

"Go in peace my child."
(P.S. God loves you.)

Control.

To control the people. You have an imaginary deity who tells people how to live and to fear this deity. Because it is an imaginary concept that can't be reasoned with and the fact that it is drilled into people's head from birth to fear this deity you have people following what the deity's speakers say.

Religion is totally seperate from a relationship with God. It's a mere way to catagorize different beliefs and nothing more.
