I am also doing a rich baked pasta dish tonight, and this is the salad I'm serving with it. I thought it would go well with your ziti for the same reason: it makes a light refreshing contrast to the rich pasta. It's also simple to make.
--Wash and separate the leaves of 2 medium heads of Bibb lettuce. (You can use any type of lettuce, but Bibb's my favorite.) Make sure you get the leaves really well dried, tear them coarsely, and place them in a large chilled bowl.
--In a small bowl, or in a small jar with a lid, combine the juice of half a lemon, 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, and a pinch each of salt and freshly ground pepper. If you use a jar, just put on the lid and shake; otherwise, use a whisk or a fork.
--Wait until just before serving to pour the dressing over the lettuce and toss well. Use only as much dressing as is needed to coat the leaves very lightly. Any leftover dressing is great on cooked vegetables.
It's just lettuce and dressing, but contrasted with the rich pasta, that's its appeal. And since it's so uncomplicated, you can have a nice time with your guests instead of slaving over a cutting board for an hour. Enjoy your dinner!

No side dish at all. I would suggest a "second dish" which even could be served at the same time with the ziti. The second one would be what goes with pasta and it is red meat. cook it alone with no potatoes or anything else but the natural spices to make up a stew. Don't forget red wine. "Buon appetito".

Some excellent sides are garlic bread, Toss salad (with a little somethin' somethin'), and mini Pizzas
HOW TO :
Garlic Bread: Take a big Vons loaf of white bread and slice is to pieces. Then smear a healthy amount of garlic butter on both sides of the bread and put parmizan cheese there to. Then put the slices back to loaf shape, wrap with aluminium foil throw in conventional oven until hot and wala!!
Toss Salad: Make your regular toss salid and add canned manderins and candied pecans on top. YUM!!!
Little pizzas: An inch diameter. Avalible at Trader Joes as well as many other food stores!
Enjoy Your Meal!

For me, just the ziti and maybe some garlic bread. I found this Italian roast recipe that is really great since you seem to like Italian.

Fail-proof sidekicks: garlic bread, green salad and either ice cream or tiramasu (not sure of the spelling) for dessert. You could also add some green beans as a side. Sounds yummy!

i think because it is a pasta dish, and rather heavy you should do something light like salad or some vegetables on the side.
