My boyfriend was asked to take all the pictures for his friend's wedding. He isn't a professional, he takes pictures as a hobby. Is it appropriate for him to ask to be paid, and if so, how much?

I would say tell your BF do it free and that could be your wedding gift to the happy couple if it is a friend and he is not a professional he should not asked to be paid if he does not go for this then tell him just to charge for the amount of time spent like say 25-40 dollars an hour. Then if the pictures do not turn out tell them it is free and he will reshoot the photos when ever the couple is available to do so. If he is not a professional make sure he atleast a digital camera with a screen so he can see each photo as he takes it so it is in focus and proper clarity. Good Luck and wish your friends Congrats on there wedding day from me.

As wedding photography is my career, I would not recommend shooting a wedding without the right equipment, lights, lenses, etc. etc. As I am sure he has heard this before but I still have to say my personal opinion is that if he has never participated in photographing a wedding before he should be very (and I stress VERY) careful in taking on this responsibility. Wedding photography is a one shot deal. You only get one chance to capture some of the most important events of this persons life. If photography is your hobby please really think through the decision before you agree to shoot the wedding. With all of that being said, if he is set on shooting the wedding he can charge whatever he feels comfortable with for his time and effort. If you judge your costs against a pro it won't be a fair number. Pro's add in many costs (such as liability insurance) which raises the amount they must charge. While I can't give a definative cost without knowing specifics about the wedding, I would say that it would not be inappropriate to ask for payment for his work. Bottom line, photography is an art so he should charge what he feels his art is worth.

People say it is not a good idea to photograph a friends wedding because what if the pictures dont turn out the way they wanted and also the subject of money is involved. That is just something they need to aggree on. I would say yes your boyfriend should be paid but the amount I am not sure what the going rate is

Figure out how much the developing and the film cost would be and double it. For an average wedding I would say around $300. That's with about ten rolls of film, and a nice album to put them in afterwards. Have him sit down with the couple and figure out how time consuming it will be. If they just want a few nice photos, I wouldn't charge anything. But if they want a bunch of formal photos, candids, etc. I would charge them. Have him get doubles so he can start a portfolio too!

I would say $50.00 per hour. Keep in mind that he will need to sign a letter to release any copyrights so the bride and groom won't have any trouble making copies of the prints.

the fee would be based on the type of friend. If it were my best friend, I wouldn't charge. But someone that I know calls me up to take pics -- they need to be charged.

I am paying an amateur $200 for mine but we are going to do the developing ourselves, cause that's where it gets pricy

I guess it depends upon how good friends he is with the groom. A lot of times I have done wedding pictures as my gift to the couple (now, they have been VERY close friends or family).

I would say if he's not printing any, just taking them on a digital camera, and there the most of the day, about $200.

free dollars and 95 cents for a best friend!!! but if not that much of a friend, i'd ask for at least a bill for his time and efforts since he's not a pro.
