Uh no. See there's this thing called the social contract. Basically I don't want to be stabbed and robbed so I won't do it to you. People who break the contract get punished. That's why we have laws.
Also if this is the only life we have it behooves us to make the most of it. To be as happy as we can. For me that includes making friends and family. Some very religious.
Being an atheist doesn't mean a life without hope. It means there's nothing after this so you have to get it right the first time.

Here is this same exhausting question. You know, if you are the type of person who would go around stealing, raping, and killing just because you don't have a book or preacher telling you NOT to, then that's YOU. (And you're a pretty scary person, if you ask me.) And if the only thing keeping you from doing those things is the fear of God's punishment, then your morals are false, and don't you think if there was a God, he would see through that? He would know what type of person you really are deep down.
We are all born with human intelligence, common sense, and empathy for our fellow men. THAT is what keeps people from acting like complete uncivilized idiots.
And atheists do not have NO HOPE. In fact, we LOVE our lives. We don't live them just waiting to die, thinking that there's something better AFTER we're dead then what we have now. We cherish the life we have. It's scary to us to think that people like you think the life you have now is worthless, and the only thing you have to look FORWARD to is dying.

You are not here to live for the afterlife. Those who do have no life at all. Their one shot is wasted. Sad that it takes a belief in eternal damnation for some people to "live right". You are probably right, if there were no god you would be out there robbing and killing. Fortunately atheists have substantially morals than you do.

This is the reason I think some theists should stay theists. They can't take responsibility for their own actions and they have to be encouraged with the prospect of heaven or the threat of hell to get them to do what's right and keep them from doing what's wrong. Atheists do what's right because they care about other people without being told to do so. I mean, empathy is, or at least it should be, a trait every decent social organism possesses.

I don't want to disappoint you, but life without an afterlife can be very pleasant. My life, for example, is quite delightful. I read exciting books, I have interesting friends, I live in a beautiful city full of stimulation, and I'm usually in the top 10% of my profession.
Sorry.

Yes, to a large extent - I think it is hopeless that we are going to die, and it is frustrating to build anything when you KNOW you're only going to lose it - but the point is, you build what you need for this life - like friends, education, a nice home, etc. Yes, it would be much more comforting to ignore the looming death sentence we are all under and many other things as well. Historically, many people use denial and delusion to avoid the biting teeth of those things.

Just because there may not be an afterlife, doesn't mean we athiests want to spend our lives in jail because we robbed a bank. In my opinion, there may not be a heaven after life, but I wouldn't mind living it up and making the best of myself while I'm here.

If you are so convinced that you can't die, and that heaven awaits you, then doesn't reality suck. I mean here you are stuck on earth, going to a crappy school, with your geeky churchy friends, waiting and hoping for the Rapture. Yup instead of Jesus Glory surrounding you, it is a Godless Atheist Teacher handing out homework assignments.
It sure must suck to be religious!

Actually, no it doesn't suck at all. If an afterlife is the only thing motivating you and if your religion is the only thing keeping you from breaking the law, I feel sorry for you.
I am mentally healthy, you see. I can get through my days and function quite well without blind faith, I can accept the inevitability of my death in a mature manner, and I can answer to myself, other people, and the law without bowing to divine authority. If you can't, perhaps you should save your pity and seek professional help for your depression problem.

Nope. My life doesn't suck.
As Carl Sagan once said: "For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring."
I can't believe in a god just because it would make me feel better.
And I find it very very disturbing that you would "be robbing banks and knoking off people I don't like" if you weren't a "believer". Why would you be doing that? Your capacity to distinguish between moral and immoral would vanish?
