Saracen
John of Damascus, himself a resident of the Caliphate's capital city, described the Saracens in the early 8th century :

There is also the people-deceiving cult (threskeia) of the Ishmaelites, the forerunner of the Antichrist, which prevails until now. It derives from Ishmael, who was born to Abraham from Hagar, wherefore they are called Hagarenes and Ishmaelites. And they call them Saracens, inasmuch as they were [sent away] empty-handed by Sarah (ek tes Sarras kenous); for it was said to the angel by Hagar: "Sarah has sent me away empty-handed" (cf. Genesis xxi. 10, 14).
These, then, were idolaters and worshippers of the morning star and Aphrodite whom in fact they called Akbar (Chabar) in their own language, which means "great". So until the times of Heraclius they were plain idolaters.

From that time till now a true prophet appeared among them, surnamed Muhammad (Mamed), who, having happened upon the Old and the New Testament and apparently having conversed, in like manner, with an Arian monk, put together his own heresy. And after ingratiating himself with the people by a pretence of piety, he spread rumours of a scripture (graphe) brought down to him from heaven. So, having drafted some ludicrous doctrines in his book, he handed over to them this form of worship (to sebas).
In this extract, John might actually have been referring to Allat, a pre-Islamic goddess equated with Aphrodite.

Most reliable historical records show that Islam was founded by prophet Muhammad himself. However, there are some hitorians who think that Islam as a system was founded some 150 years after the death of prophet Muhammad.

Islam is simply the worship of One God the Creator...
So Muslims believe that all Prophets of God were Muslims... That includes Adam- the first man and the first prophet.
Mohammed (may God be pleased with him)-- in his own life time- established the rules of Islam to the people--- before his death- the Quran was completed, and reviewed many times by him (through recitation and memorization)... and in his life time the rules on how to pray, and how to live your life as a Muslim were established and were taught.

Mohammed's duty to man was to show them that setting up partners with God was a sin- and that the messages of the prophets that came before him had been manipulated, sold off and changed or were so weak in nature that people disputed over the meaning of the messages that were brought- and broke off and away from each other. He was the last of the Prophets- who brought the pure message- to worship only God.

islam is the religion of adam, moses, abraham, and muhammad. they all worship the same God. the word islam only came during muhammad's time, which means peace. muhammad was taught and guided by Allah (which means God) and was given verses of alQuran to show him the way to lead people and he spread the teachings to the arabs.

it wasnt easy for him to teach a new teachings to the pagan arabs. he was threatened murder, and the arabs have attempted more than several times to kill him because they dont want to accept his teachings and because some of the most influential arab men had embraced islam (like Umar al-Khattab).

so islam was not created by men or even muhammad, its the religion from Allah

The first thing that one should know and clearly understand about Islam is what the word "Islam" itself means. The religion of Islam is not named after a person as in the case of Christianity which was named after Jesus Christ, Buddhism after Gotama Buddha, Confucianism after Confucius, and Marxism after Karl Marx. Nor was it named after a tribe like Judaism after the tribe of Judah and Hinduism after the Hindus. Islam is the true religion of "Allah" and as such, its name represents the central principle of Allah's "God's" religion; the total submission to the will of Allah "God". The Arabic word "Islam" means the submission or surrender of one's will to the only true god worthy of worship "Allah" and anyone who does so is termed a "Muslim", The word also implies "peace" which is the natural consequence of total submission to the will of Allah. Hence, it was not a new religion brought by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) I in Arabia in the seventh century, but only the true religion of Allah re-expressed in its final form.

Islam is the religion which was given to Adam, the first man and the first prophet of Allah, and it was the religion of all the prophets sent by Allah to mankind. The name of God's religion lslam was not decided upon by later generations of man. It was chosen by Allah Himself and clearly mentioned in His final revelation to man.
