GTO is way going to out perform the Impala. They are just 2 different kinds of cars. The best part is that if you like the GTO you can get a killer deal on a used one. The fact that they just didn't sell that well to start out with really has helped out people that are looking to buy them. I would say if you are looking for a quasi sports car then the GTO is the way. But, if you want something that can haul people as well as get up and go...the Impala is not a bad choice at all. The ride of the GTO is ok...it is a solid car and the handling is excellent as well. If you are looking for performace you can't go wrong with the 4 seat version of the Corvette that you get with the GTO. The other neat thing that you get is to really be part of a cult almost....so that's kinda cool. But either way good luck!

If you really want the details of the two vehicles you are looking at, I would suggest you start at Consumer Reports automotive, and do the comparison setup. You can also do that here in Yahoo automotive, or MSN, or Car and Driver.com or Road and Track.com... and probably a few more sites that I dont normally look at...lol. If you are going to need to haul more than 2 people with any sort of regularity, go ahead with the Impala. If you want the thrill and future potential of the GTO being a collector car, go ahead with that, but remember, a good collector car does not really get driven a lot. So if you need a mover, the Impala is a good choice. I own a 2004 with the base 3.4 liter V-6 and am very happy with it.
Good luck.

The GTO is rear wheel drive, a big advantage over the Impala. Unless you have to have four doors, the GTO is a much better performer.

Pontiac GTO is defenitely going to be much faster in all fields. It is supposed to be a sports car, while the Impala is more of a family car (not saying some family cars arent fast)

Everyone has forgotten one *very* important factor - INSURANCE! Four doors, even with high performance, are always going to be lower rated insurance wise than a coupe. Figure *everything* into your equation before you leap.
BTW, my personal choice would be the SS. It's a monster!
