My reaction to a father hitting his daughter, one time thing or not, is that it is completely unacceptable, unnecessary, inappropriate, and just plain wrong. I don't believe any man has any business putting his hands on a woman or a child.
My father used to double up his fist and hit me in the face. Back in the day, that wasn't legally defined as child abuse. I remember the shame I felt going to high school with black eyes. My father was a retired Army Colonel. My Algebra teacher had been the same, and when I sat in class, that teacher would loudly state, "What happened Annie? Smart off to your father?"
I would be filled with hate and anger.
If your daughter was hit by her father, chances are pretty strong that he'll do it again. He needs counseling so he can get the "tools" he needs to control his anger. I hope your daughter (or you, if you are the one who was hit) is/are okay. That type of "pain" remains for a very long time. Honestly, I think he should be reported. Violence never solves a thing.
May the Creator surround and protect you and yours. Annie

Personally, I believe in spanking.....nothing else. You should never discipline your kid when angry, it leaves you too open to going too far. There is no appropriate reaction....
You should only use it as a last ditch effort to keep a kid in line.
Those who say you should go to jail are full of it and if I do go behind bars for it, I'd rather face a judge, telling him why I am disciplining my child so that the judge wouldn't have to deal with that person later on.
You must attempt to also talk to them....before anything else. A child that trusts you will be less inclined to misbehave. Most kids misbehave because they are exploring their limits, or they want attention. I also agree that fixing a wall or fence is easier than fixing a relationship.
Do see a family therapist, so that you get some tools on how to better deal with communication and strategies on discipline.
This one time thing doesn't work....it should only be used as a last ditch effort.

It was a "one time thing"...until the next time. It is not at all appropriate for a father to hit his daughter, or his son for that matter. I know kids can be frustrating and disappointing at times, but if you must hit something, hit a wall or the door. You will be able to fix that a lot easier than fixing a relationship.

as the father; he has full authority to spank her, infact he is commanded by God to discipline. but if she is of puberty age-- I would think this could be inappropriate. She could be grounded or removed from bad influences. The public school system is a disgrace and i would never leave a child today under their indoctrination. Do not report this man, if he is a good father. The state does not love or care about the child. If you are the mom, stay on top of things.

If you're close to the daughter, talk to her. Make sure it was a one time thing. If it wasn't..you should report the dad for abuse. No one should be hitting someone else.

there is always a first time and usualy a second time and a third time. when does it stop being acceptable? when the child is laying in a hospital bed or perhaps in the grave? father needs immediate counseling and a swift kick in the ***!!! fathers are supposed to protect their little girls not turn them into punching bags. why do people not see this?!!!
