That King David was a Christian. Everything about the Psalms is pure Christianity.
There are a great number of the psalms uplifting the Lord, and I believe that when you do that, God tends to like it and pay more attention. But it is not flattery, it is like a cheer, you know, cheering God on to be who He really is, and to get the job done. He would do it anyway of course.
Much of the psalms encourage us, and tell us about what God can do: how He will defend us, how much He loves us, and tell of His might, power, justice, and especially how His Spirit relates to us. We learn in the psalms that God's Word is God, and that is means more to God than all His Names and their meanings.
The strength that I gain does not actually come from the Psalms themselves, but they do remind me of the strength that I have in God. Without God, I am as nothing, but with God, I can do anything (anything appropriate and righteous) according to His Will.

I love Psalms! It's so beautiful and lyrical. The most strength I get is from reading David's songs, especially those written during/after his "incident" with Bathsheeba and everything else that happened. If he could still have such a close relationship with God after committing adultery and murder, then I can certainly overcome my sins and follow God. Seeing his mistakes and how God still forgave him reassures me of God's compassion and mercy for those who are truly repentant.
I also love the Song of Solomon- who doesn't want her husband to be in ecstacy with her?! :D And Proverbs: "Better is it to dwell on the roof of a house than with a contentious wife besides." That always cracks me up! I quote it to my husband when he irritates me- works every time :D
