The two most common now-a-days are the Sig Sauer and Glock, in .40 Smith and Wesson caliber. Sig models include the P226 and P229, with the DAK trigger (Sig's 6.5lb double action only). I'm not too familiar with Glocks, but any of the mid to full size models would suit duty carry.
The departments have gotten away from the 9mm due to its lack of stopping power. The .45 is one of the best stopping calibers, but it has limited capacity in most pistols, save the Springfield XD. The .40 is a good compromise - high capacity and good stopping power and penetration.

My department issued weapon is a Sig Sauer P229 chambered. in .40 caliber. Many friends at other departments are carrying Glock .40. Alot of people in law enforcement are getting away from the 9MM due to lack of stopping power. They are also getting away from .45 cal due to cappacity. The .40 is a great comprimise. I also carry a Rock River AR15 in my trunk it is a 5.56 chambered rifle.

Sidearms are as diverse as the department. But it's safe to say that they have 12 gauge shotguns and M4/M16 military rifles.
