An easy way to tell the age of parakeets is to look closely at the black and white bars on the head. it the barring comes down to the cere (skin around the nostrils) the bird is very young, As he matures; the barring pattern will move up and over the head and look like male pattern baldness.

There are two exceptions albino and lutino These birds do not have the bars on the feathers on the head,

Another is look at the eyes of the parakeen, If the bird had big black eyes with no white around the iris; it is a young bird. if you see white around the iris; it is an older bird.

The way to train birds is to let them adjust to your surrounding. When it begins chirping; place your hand inside the cage and remove the hand. You are getting the little bird used to you being around, so you can earn it's trust, then try to touch a foot and remove the hand.

Later try to touch both feet and the beak and remove the hand.

When you have earned the little bird'd trust; place your finger under the bird's tummy. Press up and backward, and try to get the little bird to step on your finger.
Keep working until the bird is finger tame, then clip those wings and bring the little bird out of the cage,

Very young Parakeets have a lavender ceer(nostrils) that includes both males and females. As they start to mature the males Ceer will turn a shade of blue from light blue to even a very dark blue. The females will have shades of beige to cream color.
If you are looking to get a friendly young Parakeet it would be best to get it from a Parakeet Breeder. When you find a breeder don't be afraid to ask questions about the bird. And it would be best to find a breeder that has hand raised the Parakeet, hand raised are more gentle then parent raised.

If you need help locating a Parakeet Breeder you are welcome to contact me and I will help you find someone.

It is unlikely that a new parakeet (Budgie) you buy will have any training at all. Sometimes you can find a hand raised budgie, but usually you'll need to tame it and train it yourself- that can be quite rewarding.

A young budgie will have bars across his forehead all across the top of his head and his eyes will be solid black. As he gets older the bars on the top of his head will fade to the color of his body and white rings will appear around his eyes. Very young budgies may have indistinct cere colors (The cere is the part of the beak around the nostrils) but adult males have brilliant blue to purple ceres, and females will have sort of crusty looking brown-to- white ceres.

If the coloration is one that doesn't have bars, of course the info about barring won't be the same!
