There comes a time in life when we have to acknowledge there are some things we can do nothing about. Changing others is one of those things. You can tell him how you feel and what you think about his obsession but if he doesn't respond the way you want you'll have to accept that and decide what you will do.

Stay away from them. There are people like that in my man's family. I refuse to attend anything if his sister will be present.

Matthew 6:19-21
19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Not much to do with people like that. They just care about material things and even when they are very ill and even when they face death, they still are materialistic :( I have some like that in my life too.
Generally, I just try to distance myself from them as much as possible and surround myself with people who have more humanitarian values.
