The best place to start is contact your local Department or Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. It is their job to help you enter the workforce. It is free to use. They do offer some financial help and coaching to the people they service. They can also be located in the blue pages of the telephone book or on the state government website. I will provide other sources to locate money for college.

First, fill out the FAFSA form. It will tap into need based financial aid from the state and federal governments along with the college itself. The form becomes available on January 1 of each year. It needs to be done for each year of college.

Second, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.

Third, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Fourth, use Google.com and Yahoo.com to locate nursing scholarships and grants in your state. Sometimes it can be located by searching your state government website, too.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Good luck!

Congratulations, warrior! I have worked for years with students with disabilities and have worked with high schoolers with TBI who considered going to college. Contact your local TBI support group. If you don't know where they are located or how to reach them, ask at your local hospitals and rehabilitation centers. The support group usually is very helpful searching for what you need and to give you resources to tap in to. Your journey has undoubtedly been a tough one at times but bravo for pushing yourself on in life. Remember though, most TBI folks need to schedule in rest times due to the taxing of the brain ESPECIALLY when starting a new venture. Take it slow & rely on trusted others to help you assess your body needs.

Best to you!!
