You may want to go for a budget Nikon model such as the L4, if he has smaller hands. That camera doesn't have lots of features, but it will suffice as a point and shoot. Another option maybe Canon's Powershot budget models such as the Powershot A640, which I think may be a better bet. Those are the best two brands that I recommend, for this price range anyway.

For a 9yr old huh... Thats sort of hard cause some 9 yr olds are more mature than others. I would get a Kodak to start him off. Its not the best camera in the world but if he drops it or loses it, it wont be as big as a deal if he lost lets say a Canon. Be forwarned, anything under $200-250 mark will lack in some sort of quality. Kodaks lack in picture quality so it may be grainy. If picture quality is not an issue then Kodaks are fine. I am a freak about picture quality so thats why I got a Canon.

I have an inexpensive Vivitar (4mgp) that I have taught my disabled teenagers to use. I think a regular camera - not meant for young kids - can work just fine if he is taught by an adult (whose familiar with the camera) to use all the features. I was amazed that my students took to it so easily (only need help with composition of the photo).

Good luck.
P.S. The camera was around $185.00 originally but on sale at Target for $110.00. It has been WONDERFUL.

I'd suggest the Fuji Finepix A500, as it has simple to use controls, good quality, and listed as a best buy on Steves-Digicams.com
Here's the review:

Or there's also the A700 from the same range, but that wouldn't leave as much change to be able to also get him a larger xD memorycard (at least 256MB) + a set of High Capacity Rechargable AA batteries.

I'd go for a Kodak, because they're rugged. Something like a C653 would be nice.
Don't forget to buy a memory card.
