I've read all but the last two books in the series, I didn't like how toward the end they started putting words in the mouth of Jesus Christ.
Now as for the game, it is NOT, I repeat, NOT endorsed by the writers of the books. They do NOT recommend it. In fact, no mainstream Christian organization has endorsed the game to my knowledge, so no, I haven't played it.

I read the first 3 or 4 books in the series before I figured out that they weren't going to get any better and stopped reading them.
