What's the worst thing that could happen?... he could say no. but big deal! You said he was a friend right? It won't ruin your friendship, i promise!
Don't do anything too fancy, just coffee or something. One of the best "dates" if you could even call it that, was when this guy and i went to a coffee shop and talked. We ended up staying for almost 2 hours! Do something that could either be a date thing or just a friend thing. Depending on how that goes, maybe he will ask you to something of more date material. You may find from this little experiment that you don't even like him as much as you thought you did.

Why try to maninpulate someone into doing what you want?
If you want to go out with him, just ask him out!!!! This is the
year 2007, we don't have to wait for the guy to make the first
move any more! What's the worst thing that could happen,
anyway? If he doesn't want to go, he'll say no, and then you'll
have your answer. Life is too short to play stupid games.

You don't get someone to ask you out. That's only the option if you are willing to take the chance of him not going through with it. It's kind of childish anyway. You ask him out if you want to hang with him. Trust me, it will look alot better if you don't come off as being too traditional.
